It was dusk. There, just outside of town, I saw it. It was tucked behind a television repair shop on Hwy. 29 just off the tollway. I saw a sliver of white peaking out from behind the building. I wasn't actually sure what it was, but I went on a hunch that it might be what I thought it was. I made a right turn from the left lane (oops!) to get a better view.
When I made the turn down a little old road, there it was:

From photomark

I've never seen the moon this big.
Never.
I was hoping there'd be a cow or windmill along the road. Something cool for the foreground to make the photo better. Alas, there wasn't much and the moon was rising fast. And quite frankly, I'd been on the road two hours and had to go to the bathroom!
So, there it is. A big moon. And a tree.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3509703210493490801.post-89968705294311632552008-12-07T08:01:00.000-08:002008-12-07T08:21:25.282-08:00Recent WorkNot much to say. It's a bit longwinded and doesn't really come to any viable conclusion.)

When it comes to protests and rallies of the sort, San Antonio is not quite high on the list as a hotbead of activity. Sure, groups will gather, chant slogans and march to the Alamo. But it's not a Seattle, or Washington D.C., or even Austin, where there is seemingly a daily protest at the steps of the state capital.

In San Antonio activist groups seem to have trouble finding sheer numbers of people who believe in their cause so much to get them to disrupt their weekend for drive into downtown. So you end up with small to medium sized groups, many consisting largely of anti-establishment types recruited to march. These are the ones that love a good protest, no matter what the cause. Ask them a few good questions about the 'cause' and you'll find they don't know much. But they're out there, ready to exercise their freedom. They get to march through the streets, banging on makeshift bongos, chanting catchy slogans and feeling like they are flirting with the law. They are the ones who yell admonishments about trusting the 'mainstream media' — the same mainstream media they sent press releases to to get coverage of their march. These are the same people who cover their faces with bandanas, as if there is some covert federal operative secretly recording the event for a future bust. They are the ones who, if you ask their name for ID in a caption, they go into a long rant about rights to privacy (yes, the people walking in a group on public streets, carrying signs, yelling through a megaphone at bystanders — they're the ones who want privacy!) Fine, I didn't want your name anyway. Oh, and by the way, nothing says 'poser' more than someone who doesn't want to give their name in support of a cause.

Saturday, I had an opportunity to cover a last-minute march through downtown. The day's topic: the Federal Reserve Bank. They want it abolished.
Cool. More power to them.
They gathered in front of the Federal Reserve, waved signs and chanted slogans before starting their march to the Alamo.
They were a nice bunch. They obeyed traffic signals, came ready with pamphlets to hand out to bystanders.

There was a young lady carrying a large sign who 'looked the part.' I focused on her for a few moments, making her picture as she flashed a peace sign and chanted slogans.
Later, I approached her and asked her name. She was very pleasant and replied rather apologetically "No, I'd rather not. No offense."
I told her that was cool. I understand. She's exercising her rights.
Then she offered she could give me a fake name. I told her we don't make a habit of running fake names, but if she gave me a name there was not really any way I could know if she was lying. We don't make a habit of asking for official identification. We just do our due diligence.
She was about to give me her name when I told her I would use the camera's built-in audio recorder to record her name. She balked. She didn't want her voice being recorded.
So I got out a pen and paper and after a moment of hesitation she offered her name: "Madeline Cook."
Over the years, I've learned little tricks here and there that help me do my job. One of the tricks: when I think someone is giving me a fake name, I'll butcher it when spelling it out to see if they correct me.
So I start "M-A-D-D-A-I-L-L-A-N-E..."
"No," she said, and corrected the spelling. "M-A-D-E-L-I-N-E."
Now I knew. It may not have been hers, but she was giving me a real name.
"I didn't know it was possible to mis-spell a fake name," I said.
"It's my grandmothers name," she said.

So, this young lady is skeptical, or fearful, or believes some sort of conspiracy theory to the point the she doesn't want her name known, or even her voice recorded, but she's ready to offer up her grandmother's name? Does this make sense? Am I overblowing this whole thing? Probably. But it's been weighing on my mind. Why would someone sell their own grandmother out like that?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3509703210493490801.post-60609477000564789872008-11-19T13:14:00.000-08:002008-11-19T13:19:54.961-08:00Fight NightThe other night, I tagged along with Billy for a fundraiser boxing 'gala' where local politicos duked it out to raise money for...something. They're all the same. Supporters gather at the watch party on election night, mingle and cheer their candidate as they step up to the podium to give their victory/concession speech. This usually occurs just before or at 10 p.m. to afford the news stations their sound bites and live shots.

Election night 2008 was different. My assignment was the AlamObama election watch party. Needless to say, their candidate wasn't going to be making any appearance at El Tropicano Hotel in downtown San Antonio.

As the night progressed supporters filled with anticipation. One state after another was projected won by Obama and the exuberance grew.

Finally, CNN declared Obama winner:

From photomark

The flash never seems to go off when I want it to!

Everyone erupted, just as I expected. Just as they do every election. But this night would be different. The celebrating didn't stop. The outpouring continued as supporters relieved themselves of anticipation, expectation, reservation, shock and surprise. Smiles turned to tears. Jumping turned into dancing:

When I'm shooting events, the analytical part of my brain sort of shuts off as I just concentrate on what's unfolding in front of me. Later, after shooting, I'll make sense of it all.
Again, this night would be different.
As I continued shooting my mind kicked in and I began thinking of just how important this moment was. I thought about race and politics and people's hopes and expectations. I thought about being alive during this time and wondering how it compared to the civil rights movement. I thought about the future of the United States and the path our future president would steer us to. I thougt about how so many people didn't put race first. But, it seems people unified behind an idea — whether it's right or wrong — can be more beneficial than a correct idea that divides people.

Taking it all in.

As President-elect Obama gave his victory speech, local supporters gathered around several televisions to listen and watch.
This might as well have been Grant Park that night.
The group listened intently, with adoration in their eyes.

One older lady waved back at Obama through the television as he made his appearance.

This man who so many have pinned their hopes on, who seems so much larger than life, was so accessible.

As Obama left the stage, the locals filed out into the streets, heading home amid the blare of car horns ringing throughout downtown. Even excited. The anticipation builds as football season starts. First high school, then college, then the pros.
I've shot three games in three days — all of them high school.
Here's a recap of the Black Hole that is "Week Zero."

Game 1: Thursday night, Alamo Stadium, Artificial Turf

Ahh, Alamo Stadium, the "Rock Pile" as it's so affectionately called. I have a different name: the Big Flick. The lights flicker. It's not noticeable with the naked eye (why do they call the eye "naked," by the way?), but at 1/500th of a second, you notice it. Looking at the contact sheet of photos, it looks like someone kept changing the camera setting. One frame looks good, the next frame - a split second later - is too dark.
Lucky for me, the game started at 7p.m., so there was a little bit of daylight to shoot with. Screw the stadium lights!

•••

Game 2: Friday Night, Comalander Stadium, Artificial Turf

Comalander Stadium has one of the biggest and nicest "Press" boxes in the area. Unfortunately, even with three levels, it's one of the worst in the areas for access. As you enter the stadium, you are given either a field pass, or a press box pass. Ask for both and you'll get a vacant look.

"A field pass and a press box pass? That's unpossible!"

I've learned not to ask and just head up to the press box without the pass. Invariably, there's someone up there waiting by the elevator asking if I have a press box pass.

"Gee, sir, I've got my newspaper's press badge, my Spurs season credential, my county sheriff's dept. i.d. badge. I've even got the field pass, but I don't have the little yellow slip of paper that says 'press box pass'."

Anyway, back to the game...I made one moderately interesting photo. It was the photo that didn't run in the paper. I'm not necessarily saying it should have run. But it should have.

Maybe next time I'll get the shot with faces.

•••

Game 3: Saturday Afternoon, Alamodome, Artificial Turf
Hey, a game in daylight. Yay!
It's in the Alamodome. Boo!
The Alamodome used to be the worst place in San Antonio to shoot a game. There's nothing quite like attending a high school football game where a couple thousand (at best) fans pour into a 65,000 seat domed cavern. And the light was horrible. Absolutely atrocious. Worse than 2A school stadiums. Not only was it dim, but the light was coming from such a high angle, you rarely get detail under the facemask as it is hidden in shadow.
The ambiance still sucks, but, since the Big 12 Championship game last December, the light has much improved. It's not great, but it's good. And constant. No flickering. No clouds to change the light. I'll take it.

•••

You'll notice I've been listing the type of turf at each stadium. I'm not sure there are any area stadiums left where the kids play on grass. (insert joke here about marijuana usage)
There are no more mud games. No big clods of dirt stuck in facemasks. Just glorified carpet and turf-toe. That, in my humble opinion, stinks.
•••
Here's the recap:
Shooting high school football is nice in small doses.
My football shooting is mediocre.
I don't like poorly lit stadiums.
I don't like Comalander Stadium.
The Alamodome is a much better place than it used to be.
I dont like artificial turf.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3509703210493490801.post-35683014753679576482008-08-27T16:28:00.000-07:002008-08-27T16:30:28.713-07:00Runnin Down a DreamI saw Tom Petty last night. They're touring it all over the country and you can go have your picture taken with it. That's what I did. Why?
Well, when the World's Largest Rubber Band Ball comes within a mile of your home, you go. It's just that simple.

Seeing the ball, in all its grandeur brought back two distinct memories:

1) Many years ago, when my brothers and and other neighbor kids spend a summer day tying hundreds, nay thousands, of rubberbands together to stretch the length of Manorfield Drive. We tied each end of the rubber chain to the backs of bicycles and the riders took off in opposite directions. Ah, good times. In fact, I think it's my only memory that doesn't involve toilet paper, fire, Playboy, dog poo or severe trauma to my body.

2) The other memory the World's Largest Rubber Band Ball brought up was when Tricia and I first started dating. When we'd go to Taco Cabana, I would half-jokingly talk about making a foil ball with the taco wrappers. I got the impression from her reaction that it would be kind of a bad idea. Seeing the World's Largest Rubber Band Ball made me wonder how big that thing would be if I had stuck with it. But then, when I picture myself standing next to my giant ball of foil, I see myself with a big beard and long fingernails. Don't ask why.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3509703210493490801.post-68263017609363896682008-07-30T23:20:00.000-07:002008-07-30T23:44:15.063-07:00Wide Open SpacesI left L.A. and flew to Billings, Montana. Billings is the largest city in Montana with a population of 100,000.
In Texas, Billings would be the 25th largest city.
Anyway, Billings wasn't my final destination, as I still had to drive three and half hours to Gillette, Wyoming.

It took a while getting out of Billings.

After I did make it out of Billings, the drive was quite beautiful. Three-plus hours of driving through the rolling hills. Yes, those undulating, nauseating hills. The city is kind of three towns in one.

The view from city hall.

There’s the normal, everyday town with businesses, fast-food joints and the local neighborhoods.
There’s also the beach town. Ventura sits right on the coast and, in fact, my hotel was just a few yards from the beach. There’s a state park and a harbor as well as the beachside restaurants.

Lots'o palms.

Then, there’s downtown Ventura; a stretch of maybe five blocks on Main St. that’s a nice mix of shopping, fine dining and entertainment.

Main Street, downtown Ventura.

It seems Ventura is going through a renaissance of sorts, as there wasn’t nearly this amount of activity the last time I was here. Because of this, there’s an eclectic mix. You’ll see a nice restaurant next to a dive bar. Or a thrift store next to an antique store next to a fine furnishings store. During my stay, Kevin Costner, who grew up in Ventura, had his new movie’s premier at the Ventura Theater. I didn’t go, cause I was eating at Dukes on the beach.
It’s pretty cool. Especially the fine dining I referred to. In my short week there, I ate Thai, Peruvian, Indian and Persian food. I also ate lots of seafood. And In-n-Out Burger. It was all very tasty and moderately priced.

Greetings at "A Good Thai and Peruvian Restaurant."
